While I don’t disagree with you, that argument could be used the other way, too.
 
Personally, I didn’t get the feeling, the “spark,” of shipping. It felt more like he was trying to make her comfortable when she was clearly nervous about the dance.

I don’t feel this “came out of left field”, Sandbar has been with the others this entire time and thus, he’s grown to know them. Now, suddenly, there is an opportunity for him to specifically ask one to be his partner for the local dance.
 
And while others may not see it, it’s pretty easy to see why an earth pony might be smitten with a Yak.

EDIT: I don’t ship it, though. It felt like it came out of left field. Like it was made up for this episode. Sandbar never particularly thought highly of Yona before.
