One does usually don´t talk ill About the Father in front of the Children (at least if they were a good non-abusive parent)
 
Also it might as well be that Wind Rider IS dead by now. (One could write a whole fanfic About him wanting to preserve his record to leave something for Wind Sprint to remember him by as “This is my Father.” instead of “That was my Father.”) For the Meta context it also was 1year before he started to search for a new Person in their lives.

I mean, if there were any hints of Clear Sky having disdain for her ex, I don’t remember that being so much as hinted at in the episode. Plus, I know it’s not proof, but Wind Rider seems like he’s old enough to be a grandfather, not a father.
 
This really feels like a case that’s pointing to something like what happened to Applejack’s parents, if downplayed (since only one died), especially considering the meta aspects behind this episode, with Quibble’s actor, and the other two. It’s best thought of as a role reversal of an IRL situation that happened to Patton, in my opinion.

His commitment to his reputation and record? Wind Sprint’s love of sports and disdain for weakness/fakery? Clear Sky’s description of Quibble’s personality? Sounds to me like the Rarity Investigates incident was the last straw for Clear Sky, and she went looking for somepony who’d be better for her and Wind Sprint.
 
Many, many women marry or get involved with sociopaths, some for love that will never be fully returned, some for sex, some for money or fame. She’s a unicorn, and if this is all true, she may have been a big Wonderbolt fan from Canterlot who found the dashing older stallion to be a dream come true initially.
