I believe the episode is based on the situation where Patton’s wife died, leaving him with his daughter and then later remarried someone else. So it’s basically a reversal of that.

It’s kind of like Applejack’s parents, and the shooting stars, “if Mom and Dad were here, they’d be so proud of ya,” and Apple Bloom saying “somethin’ to remember them by.”
 
They’re not outright stating it… but damn if you’re hard-pressed to say the implication isn’t death, because that’s obviously what it is.
 
Otherwise, they probably wouldn’t be spoken of as fondly.

I had guessed we wouldn’t find out anything about what happened to Wind Sprint’s dad, and I was almost right. The episode doesn’t mention it outright, but there’s a pretty big hint that the poor fellow’s no longer among the living: Wind Sprint says, “My dad was a great flyer.”
 
“Was” a great flyer, not “is”. She wouldn’t have put it that way if the guy was still around.

After watching the episode, I would really liek to know what happened with Wind’s real father? She talks about him, that Quibble is not him and so.  
Did he died or are he and Clear divorced? Imagine his turn seeing his daughter and she’s like:  
“Quibble went with me to the Buck Ball tournament and he’s friends with Rainbow Dash and the Buck Ball team from Ponyville!”
