Not quite per image. Per frame. GIF images can have ‘local color tables’, meaning each frame in the image has its own palette. But that takes up a lot of space since the tables aren’t compressed, so I doubt this sub-600K image has anything but a global color table. Having that Lyra and the cat video in the same table doesn’t really honor either’s colors.
And the ordered dithering employed in the image here (it’s also something Nonymous employs to great effect, I’ve noticed) can help create a pattern that the LZW compression algorithm compresses more easily.

Grayscale is enabled when you upload in grayscale gifs/images for some reason. You can turn it off. Also, I’m loving this new comment preview and reply system.
