G1 (as in the classic series) ran from 1986-1987. The specials were in 1984 and 1985, the movie was 1986.
My Little Pony Tales (G1.5, sometimes called “G2”) was in 1992, quite some time after the original series had finished, not “at about the same time”. :)
If I remember from childhood, the first two cartoons ran at about the same time (They’re actually both G1 ponies), then G2 didn’t have a cartoon so there was a large blank spot, so I don’t think at the time they had any plans on making future gen cartoons. Even though G4 did immediately follow G3, I’d argue that G3 committed suicide with the ‘Newborn Cuties’ episodes as they made two and then gave up because they were so bad. Also G3 was never really a proper series with seasons and episodes.
Then G4 came along and made roughly twice as many episodes as all previous seasons combined. It’s really the only one that one might argue that a previous season killed, but even then they more or less just ran out of ideas and didn’t want to run it into the ground. So you could also argue that it just legitimately finished it’s story, died of ‘old age’ if you anything, depending on how well they end it.
They’re going to go back in time and correct the mistakes of the past…

It was it’s own Toyline. And yeah it was all based around a PC game that nobody remembers. But regardless it’s G2.5 Friendship Gardens 1997-1999
