In hindsight, she wouldn’t maintain this position. We really don’t know exactly WHAT happened to Earth, but Equestria itself is more of less in one piece, and that’s because of the efforts of the New Five. If Earth got hit with a similar calamity, who would be there to undo it?

So, knowing what we know now, Sunset is better off in Equestria.

That’s being said, it’s weird that Sunny Starshine, despite being naturally curious AND being fascinated with the Mane Six, never asks about Earth and/or the mirror portal.

No matter how it was marketed, it wouldn’t of saved the mess of a final product we got in the end.

She is home doe. She and others consider the EqG world her world. She even said it in Forgotten Friendship that the EqG world is her world and Celestia and Princess Twilight even called it her world as well. It’s been pretty clear Sunset is never returning to Equestria and in the series she has shown no interest in going back, she doesn’t even visit Equestria in her leisure time, not even for holidays nor to casually visit Twilight. All the times she’s gone are because of emergencies.
 
And if we include meta the director Ishi Rudell said she found the place where she belongs implying she doesn’t belong in Equestria.

It’s been made pretty clear in the series that her place is in the Human world though. She doesn’t have to return to Equestria permanently; she is free to go there when she pleases. As for her Human counterpart that is something I would also like to learn about.

The superhero aspect of EQG is so boring though, right up there with high school AU the series started as.
 
It’s infinitely more interesting seeing the EQG characters interacting with Equestria itself and I hope the end of the special gets followed up on.

The trouble with that is that Katrina Hadley has stated that they don’t plan out long-term stories for the series.

At Comic Con, they said it was to “tie up a loose end”. They made it sound like they were bringing Sunset Shimmer back to Equestria for good, or at least the girls crossing over to Equestria would play a significant part of the story.
 
Last time Sunset returned to Equestria it played a key part in the story and actually DID tie up some loose ends with her character. Reuniting with Celestia, trying to investigate why her friends couldn’t remember her, etc. This time around all we get are some quick sight gags and the Sci-Twi, Sunset and EQ RD lolly-gagging around over some tea in Twilight’s castle. If anything, it makes the three look like assholes. They’re sitting around in Twilight’s castle conversing and eating chocolate while their friends are stranded on a sinking ship. What bitches!
