one of the things i always hated about pinkie in the first few episodes was that she was not motivated by anything. she was nonsensical, overly silly even in serious situations, even manipulative in the gala episode (though all of them were in different ways)
 
i didnt like her because she didnt have depth, she was the joke character, the one that didnt care because she wasnt capable of reacting properly to actual issues. “people are in danger? lets sing a song!” kind of person.
 
but then the smile smile smile song came out and it was the turning point of my perception of her. she went from having no motivation, no depth, and no purpose to actually having a reason to do what she does.
 
 
empathy is very important to me. if i see someone struggling, if i see someone hurting i cant stop myself from feeling emotionally towards them and i try to fix whatever the issue is,and it has backfired tremendously multiple times but its how i function now. my desires to help are maximum but my ability to help is limited by my inexperience and my personality issues.
 
the smile smile smile song gave me the idea that pinkie is the same way. she cares. shes not just someone who is silly, shes silly BECAUSE-
 
because a lot of reasons. as the series continued and it showed her emotionally distant family, her boring uneventful life, and her desire to make things better but not knowing how. that stuff resonated with me a lot
 
pinkie is a character that has problems, the writers dont always know how to write her and it makes her fairly inconsistent in what she does, but the core of her character has been going more and more towards the “i want to help, i just dont know how”
 
and she goes with what has worked in the past. singing, being silly, having parties, showing people love in the ways that would make her happy. empathy without social insight.
 
its been touched on multiple times actually. where she did something stupid because she thought they wanted her to do that stupid thing.
 
or she caused an accident that messed things up. coughcrankydoodlecough
 
or the time she harassed fluttershy into having multiple panic attacks. that one was bad writing but it could still be put under “trying to help but just being REALLY bad at it”
 

 
that song, that phrase “your smile makes me happy” is a beautiful thing. it is empathy in its purest form. its easy to mistake it for silliness, or childishness, and it absolutely can be used to justify terrible things because she can be an idiot even at the best of times, but she means well.
 
you can be a good person and still do stupid things sometimes. thats how i see her now. a really inexperienced (albeit magically “good at random things”) character that wants to make everyone happy and falls short sometimes.
 
good character. deserves better writing sometimes though.
