I know why some of you are disappointed that Optimus Prime died in the 1986 Transformers G1 movie after appearing throughout two incredibly successful seasons of over 65 episodes. This saddest scene of the Transformers movie and possibly the biggest tearjerker in the entire Transformers franchise have caused many kids to cry and been taken out of the theaters by their parents and then locked themselves up in their rooms or closets for a week or two because of Optimus Prime’s death. Even some fans who were also sad about Optimus Prime’s death blamed Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime for the death of Optimus Prime. But ultimately, Megatron (who was later reformatted by Unicron into Galvatron) was the one responsible for the death of Optimus Prime because he pulled the trigger by taking full advantage of the Autobot’s bravery and honor. It’s because Optimus Prime’s toy was being discontinued in 1986 and Hasbro, Sunbow, and Marvel Productions killed off the main character in the film based on the Transformers cartoon to be replaced by Ultra Magnus and later Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime after the suggestion was made to kill off Duke in the G.I. Joe movie which is also based on the G.I. Joe cartoon. However, despite both movies that were set during both cartoons were in production at the same time, and when the Transformers movie was released first, the reaction of the death of Optimus Prime by many fans have turned into an impact that spreads towards Hasbro. As such, killing off the lead character of a cartoon, or film series, or franchise created by Hasbro is possibly such a bad mistake they have made and would never do again. Especially when the My Little Pony movie (which is based on the Friendship Is Magic cartoon) nearly killed off the Mane Six various times throughout the film. Well, 6 times in the movie. Pinkie Pie was nearly killed off after she accidentally bounces the rope tied to Captain Celaeno’s pirate ship, falls down, and almost hits a rock in her head to death thanks to Twilight Sparkle saving her. Even Twilight was nearly killed off at the climax of film. Oh. And the movie also nearly killed off Princess Luna after she was caught mid-flight by one of Tempest Shadow’s obsidian orbs that petrified her because Twilight saved her from being smashed into pieces by holding her and lowering her down safely with her magic in a total of 10 seconds. Luna was nearly killed off twice precisely because she and the other two princesses Celestia and Cadance that were also petrified by Tempest and dethroned by the Storm King along with Luna were nearly killed off since we saw some of the wreckage of Canterlot Castle’s roof, walls, and pillars collapse by the Storm King’s huge storm that he created with the Staff of Sacanas as some of the debris would have crushed the first three princesses to death into pieces. And so, the fan backlash of Optimus Prime’s death in the film causes the makers of the G.I. Joe movie change Duke’s death to become a coma and he would come out of it instead. During his coma, Duke dreamt the entire events of the 2010 cartoon “G.I. Joe Renegades” which is actually set in a different continuity and acts as a dream reality. And of course, Duke did return in the 1989 sequel series of the 1983 cartoon that got the same titled name as the previous cartoon but animated by DIC instead of Sunbow and also picked up right where the movie left off. However, according to story consultant and writer of the G.I. Joe cartoon and film Buzz Dixon, if you watch the scene where Duke falls into a coma from Serpentor’s spear stabbing with the volume turned down, it’s obvious that Duke actually dies of his wounds of Serpentor’s snake spear at the end of the scene. But Duke didn’t die in this scene thanks to the fan backlash of Optimus Prime’s death from the film. Even though not one of the Joes or Cobras died in both cartoons of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and it’s full length movie with the exception of the AU counterparts of the Joes seen in the two parter episode of the Sunbow series “Worlds Without End” and the entire Headhunter army lead by Headman seen in the two-parter episode of the sequel series animated by DIC “The Greatest Evil”. Also, the G.I. Joe movie was originally gonna have a scene of Duke’s funeral prior to the final battle against Cobra and Golobulus and Cobra-La in the early draft of the film and Lieutenant Falcon avenge Duke by killing Serpentor in the final battle. And of course the G.I. movie was originally gonna inspired the Transformers movie where Duke was originally gonna be like Optimus Prime, Lieutenant Falcon was originally gonna be like Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, and Serpentor was also originally gonna be like Megatron. That’s because the death of Duke was written to inspired the death of Optimus Prime. And yes, when Hasbro have received a number of hundreds, or thousands, or millions of fan letters about losing their favorite main character of Transformers in the movie, the makers were forced to revive Optimus Prime at the end of the third season titled “The Return of Optimus Prime”. And the death of Duke in the G.I. Joe movie was scrapped in the finished film. While the scene was kept, replacement dialogue was inserted stating that Duke had gone into a coma. And at the end of the film, it is stated that he had come out of the coma. But both the original and final versions of the film has the Joes crying at the sad scene of the film. The original/earlier draft has the Joes mourning over Duke’s death. While the final draft of the film has the Joes still crying after Duke falls into a coma instead of killed in battle. But is true that people started crying when someone dies, or gets injured, or fell into a coma. Who cares? Serpentor would have killed Lieutenant Falcon in the anti-climax of the film. And no wonder why Duke survived his impalement of Serpentor’s snake spear. Similar to how Princess Celestia survived Nightmare Moon’s blast in the flashback scene seen in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic season four premiere two-parter “Princess Twilight Sparkle”. Or how King Kong from the 1976 remake of the same name of the film released in 1933 survived the attack of A military force and his fall off the South Tower of the World Trade Center that was destroyed 20 years ago along with the North Tower during the 9/11 attack and prior to it’s sequel “King Kong Lives” that was produced by De Laurentiis Entertainment Group that also distribute the Transformers movie that same year in 1986. Or how the FLDSMDFR (the Flint LockWood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator) survived the explosion at the end of the first Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs movie and vegans to operate again the follow film. Or how come Sledge and his Crew survived the black wormhole created by the destruction of the Dark Energem created by the Dino Charge Rangers and survived by erased from existence while the Rangers are altering and revising their history in Power Rangers Dino Super Charge finale “End of Exinction” and prior to the events of Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel and how Heximas survived the demise of the alternate version of Sledge and his Crew prior to the events of the Dino Super Charge epilogue Christmas episode “Here Comes Heximas”. Or how come Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd’s son Thrax, the five remain generals of the Machine Empire Venjix, Gerrok, Tesla, Automon, and Steelon along with a minority of Cogs, Finster, Scorpina, And Lokar the Terrible survived Zordon’s Energy Wave in the finale of both Power Rangers In Space and the Zordon Era “Countdown to Destruction” alongside Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, Divatox, and Astronema prior to the events of “Forever Red” from Power Rangers Wild Force, “Once A Ranger” from Power Rangers Operation Overdrive and Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon. Transformers writer of both the cartoon and the film Ron Friedman in favor of raising the mistakes for the Autobots and Decepticons by killing off some of the cast including Brawn, Prowl, Rachet, Ironhide, Windcharger, Wheeljack, Huffer (according to the season three episode “Dark Awakening”), all three original Decepticon Seekers: Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp, and all three of the Insecticons: Shrapnel, Bombshell, and Kickback since much of the 1984 and almost half of the 1985 toy line were discontinued. Even the deaths of Mirage, Red Alert, Trailbreaker, and Shockwave were cut from the finished film and were reduced to bonus scenes of the film, and since Reflector’s explanation why he didn’t return in season 3 of the cartoon is unknown until 20-21 years later, his fate revealed in the 20th anniversary IDW comic adaptation of the film. Ron Friedman stated that he knew that if Optimus Prime were to die in the movie, he would eventually be brought back at the end of the third season due to fan backlash and fan letters being send to Hasbro about Optimus Prime’s death. However, Hasbro still mandated that it happened. And so Ron Friedman wrote Hot Rod as the eager teenager who so wanted to prove to Optimus Prime that he could be a hero as well despite every single Autobot alongside their allies are all heroes too and a harsh life lesson could forever shape his destiny to be transformed into Rodimus Prime by the end of the film. Also, Ron Friedman decided that Optimus Prime and his legacy would live on within the Matrix of Leadership through Ultra Magnus (who is possibly not a true leader of the Autobots) and later Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime. And Ultra Magnus was purposely written to have been the new leader temporarily until the final battle of the film. So that the audience knew that he wasn’t the right choice to replace Optimus Prime as the new leader of the Autobots even if he seemed like he was since he was a white redeco of Optimus Prime but with a different trailer. Screenwriter of Transformers and G.I. Joe and screenwriter of the Transformers movie Flint Dille has even stated that it was very much like the bibilical tales of King Saul and how David was truly the chosen one to become king of Israel and the successor of Ish-boseth and not Saul despite Saul being and acting like one in the Old Testament of the Bible or the Books of Samuel. Which his reply to user:RodimusPrimal on Facebook four years ago was “The Matrix fit. It never fit Ultra Magnus right. Sometimes the real leader isn’t the one who gets appointed. Optimus Prime’s third death isn’t canon. Because Headmasters ignore the events of “The Rebirth”. Despite Headmasters being released before The Rebirth. And Optimus Prime was truly revived from his demise in the movie at the end of the third season. And in “Dark Awakening”, Optimus comes back as an undead zombie and go on a suicide run and his dead body was recovered and repaired by Gregory Swofford and Jessica Morgans in “The Return of Optimus Prime - Part 1” after Optimus Prime’s suicide.
