Twilight also implied in Keep Calm and Flutter On that “Reformation Spell” is something that she already used and tested and i think that would also work as mind control if it wasn’t destroyed by Discord.
Yeah, that’s a really disturbing aspect of the MLP universe – no one seems to care that much about mind control. I mean, one presumes the Want It Need It spell doesn’t usually result in a town tearing itself apart, but it was implied that it wasn’t even the first time Twilight had used it (she said something like “Works every time” after casting it.)
In pony terms, maybe Discord messing with ponies’ heads really is seen as a lot less serious than we would take it. I kind of suspect that what they objected to was not that he messed with ponies’ heads but that he broke up friendships, which we would consider a far lesser sin than mind control in the first place.
But I don’t think it whitewashes Discord at all to say that another villain was more evil than he was, because there is a lot of room between anything we’ve ever seen Discord do, and the deepest depths of true evil.
I agree with what you said wholeheartedly. But in the comic itself the attitude seems to be that ’Discord only mind-whammied people, so he was just being naughty and not really evil.
It also seems like mind-controlling people for whatever reason and to whatever end is seen as rather easily forgivable in both the comic and the show.
I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what he thinks.
In a fanfic, I had Discord sing a parody of the “Dead Puppies” song: “Dead ponies aren’t much fun, they don’t scream when they fall, they don’t run away at all…” He likes change, and motion, and reaction. A dead or badly injured pony can’t react like a living, relatively healthy pony can. So he terrorized ponies, he made their lives a living hell, but he didn’t kill or maim. And we know this, because if he was willing to do that, he’d have done it to the Mane 6 to stop them from turning him to stone.
We’ve never seen Discord cause permanent physical harm to anyone or anything. Physical changes, yes. Mental harm, yes. But I don’t think it whitewashes Discord at all to say that another villain was more evil than he was, because there is a lot of room between anything we’ve ever seen Discord do, and the deepest depths of true evil.
Hasbro and IDW: We dunno and we’re too lazy to explain. Lel.
@Ardashir
Yeah, Discord really isn’t one to talk if he wants to prevent Cosmos from doing the same.
Then again this could what Discord thinks of his actions. “Why are people so mad at me? I mean, sure, I mind-schtunked anyone and everyone into complete lunacy – but I never physically struck anyone!”
Thank you!!
Discord could’ve killed the Mane Six many times over if he really wanted to in his debut, but he didn’t. Is he above tricking others into thinking he’d hurt others? Definitely not, see that possibly illusionary Bugbear and Ursa Major for proof of that.
That being said, yes he was and kind of still is a prick, but he wasn’t an actively murderous maniac.
Edited
He probably had SOME standards. His mindset back then was more that of a child, really. Or he was just as bad as Cosmos, only that she didn’t bother to hide that fact.
MUST PROTECT WAIFU!!
@Red Pill Man
Well Discord actually never hurt anypony. We can see in the show, even before his reformation he never hurt anyone, only messing around and playing with ponies as puppets. He was bad only not as bad as Cosmos who do hurt ponies.
And seeing how Discord tryed to escape from her in the beginning of the comic, it seems like she may have started to abuse of him as well …
At least that’s what I think and understood of this first part ^^
@PurpleWonderPower
Issue #75 :)
We dont have to change characters past to appeal to their fans. Discord was cool because he was evil and change sides. Making him good from the start is missing the point. And Resturn of Harmony or Princess Twilight Sparkle made it clear that he was enjoying suffering of others without any Cosmos being involved.
It’s just saying out loud what the show implied.
Yeah i somewhat hate that the story tries to “white wash” Discord’s deed by implying that he never wanted to hurt anyone and all of the destruction was always Cosmos doing.
Not only would this give her a good niché, but could refer back to “the stars will aid her escape”…
If any writer would only realize that - _ -
When did that fight happen?
