It’s nice for you guys to hold you hopes up but without a cohesive talent from outside the toy industry (you know the one that left after being stabbed in the back)

And the show did well without Faust for 7 1/2 seasons, also they don’t “back stabbed” her, she left

“alternative universe in school who are totally hot storytelling opportunity

While I dont like EQG I have to say that now is more like a super hero/magical girl thing with some slice of life and the school barely has something to do with the stories now. and, TBH, Sunset’s arc and development was way better than Starlight’s

@Background Pony #71E7
Also the species of the protagonist changed.That’s no big deal,that’s not like we named the franchise about their species and made it a core element

Last time I checked the franchise name was “My Little PONY”, not “My Little UNICORN” and before you say “Alicorns aren’t ponies” technically pegasus and unicorns aren’t either.

Also, you sound very condescending making fun of people that are giving G5 the benefit of the doubt. If we thinked like you back at the time we should haven’t watched FIM because G3 and G3.5 where total shit. We still don’t know who is going to work on the G5 cartoon, we don’t even know how is going to look (the leaks included pre-production designs that may not be final), and if you keep saying “but Hasbro’s franchises had bad story lines in the past” I can point you to other Hasbro franchises (mainly Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: the gathering)that had and still have good stories

I’m just saying:look at the past ,what is this company track record and learn from it
Also you missed the part when i said “G4 is going to be one hard act to follow” because i mean it

@northern haste
We’ll never go back to the 1990s when nerds were confined to their Google Groups.Fandom “culture” made Comic Book Guys of us all ,me included,i’m dimly aware of it
When everyone an expert, no one is.Thanks Internet (and especially 4[REDACTED]n) for having irremediably sucking out all the fun of fiction

It’s nice for you guys to hold you hopes up but without a cohesive talent from outside the toy industry (you know the one that left after being stabbed in the back) they’ll be back to Bayformers tier in no time.I’m not saying they shouldnt try,after all that’s their job and they made it clear they treat it as a job but get ready to see them fall heavy and be desperate to catch the lightning in the bottle a second time.They’ll have to deal with Hasbro overconfidence and unwarranted overconfidence in their own ability and that G4 is going to be one hard act to follow
My advice:skip G5 (or take a peek at it from time to time if you want,that’s your choice to make like for real if you have fun with it good for you) and pray that Hasbro get bought by Disney (since they seem to be in a roll nowadays) so some real storytellers can step up and discard hokey “alternative universe in school who are totally hot storytelling opportunity.Also the species of the protagonist changed.That’s no big deal,that’s not like we named the franchise about their species and made it a core element”

@Ihhh
Way to completely miss his point. :/

@Ebalosus
Ah. Misinterpreted you here.

I would say that forgivable flaws are still flaws. Heatsinks were a flaw in Mass Effect 2 (from a writing perspective), just not a story killing flaw (like, not even close).

In this case, the issue- apart from the dismissive attitude toward criticism- is that the mistake was not only noticeable with some (admittedly detailed) research, but extremely easy to avoid. Just pick a different phobia or give it to a different character, problem solved. I could’ve easily seen them doing the same thing with Rainbow Dash in Twilight’s place, or reusing the quesadilla phobia and having Pinkie’s class be the one to set it off. And since the exact silly thing Twilight was afraid of was barely relevant to what happened in the short, it’s not a case of “this was so brilliant we couldn’t help but use it”. It wasn’t a necessary change, so it’s not a mark of good writing to keep it in.

I’m not expecting anyone to declare this non-canon, be officially reprimanded, lose their job, or even apologize. Obviously demanding any kind of retribution would be ridiculous. But it would’ve been nicer to hear “oops, didn’t notice that, sorry” than to see Berrow try to push the fault on the fans. Admitting a tiny mistake is a much more mature response than getting defensive over it. I’m pretty sure Nick Confalone, for example, would’ve owned up to it. And the majority response here being insults toward the short’s critics does not reflect well on anyone.

I didn’t even mind the short. It was nice to see Starlight focused on in one of these, and to see a magic incident that didn’t make her look like she was relapsing. I’m pretty fond of the idea of her using her abilities constructively. So no, not everyone who cares about continuity errors is pathetic or incapable of enjoying MLP. I’d like it very much if people here would ease off on that.

Mass Effect 2’s heat sinks didn’t even improve the gameplay, though.

My point was more along the lines of people tend to only get picky when it suits them, and tend to forget that it’s a combination of factors that causes the loss of narrative coherence. Retconning how the guns work in Mass Effect 2 doesn’t break the narrative or the setting, because the narrative and setting isn’t specifically about them; just as Twilight Sparkle being retconned into having a fear of ladybugs doesn’t break the narrative or characterisation of the show concerning Twilight, because again they aren’t about overcoming a fear of ladybugs.

Yes I will grant you that it’s annoying when they fudge or bend a detail or characterisation, but those in-and-of-themselves don’t break narrative coherence any more so than when the latter-day Star Treks forget that you cannot transport through the shields. If Twilight having a fear of ladybugs was critical to the plot insofar as it concerns the overall narrative when before this fear didn’t exist, then the griping would be justified because the fear of ladybugs would be an asspull.

I just find it bizarre that people are treating a drama-focused show as if it were Mass Effect or Star Trek where nitpicky details come with the genre.

I had to google that to find out what it was, and LOL at the idea of a civilization with a tech level that allows for disposable heat sinks that are universal to all small arms, but not an “empty magazine” heat sink that slowly bleeds off heat so the weapon can still be used, giving it the same effect as the original pre-retcon version.

So does a certain space-RPG series from the late 2000s, but that didn’t stop people from turning a blind eye and praising the ever loving shit out of it and justifying retcons away with “it made the gameplay better!”
Background Pony #2C33
@Vree
I was under the impression that a good writer could manage both. Also, yet another case of looking down on people for noticing details in a show that often encourages that sort of awareness.

But it is NOT bad writing. In fact, one of the more important artistic rules is:
Never let continuity or preexisting canon get in the way of telling a good story. And yes that includes retcons.
Your number 1 priority is that your current storyworks as its own whole, NOT that every detail only nerds will notice is perfectly accurate. Attention to minute detail can impress and matter in shows by a single writer or a strong setting focus, but not for an episodic show with hundreds of writers, where retconning weaker previous ideas from the hundreds is practically an obligation.

The only time we care about bad retcons is when a strong core element or good previous story is altered for the sake of a very mediocre new story. If it is the other way around, and we get a good story that only ignores something that didn’t matter much in the first place, that’s not only allowed but how you should go about it.
Background Pony #59BB
I don’t dislike G.M. Berrow’s writing generally and the error is minor, but she should still be willing to own up to it, not tell others to stop noticing. MLP’s a show full of little details and continuity aspects that are intended to be noticed and appreciated. It’s a very bad place to suddenly suggest your audience is wrong for not turning a blind eye to them.
And to some others in the comments here, calling fans pathetic for realizing or being disappointed by this isn’t very mature either. They care. Don’t discourage that.
