Description
Ember can’t say about Garble that he doesn’t follow orders, or that he lacks determination. Lately she’s been taking advantage of this by assigning him physically demanding jobs. While this does keep the seemingly bottomless pit of energy busy, Ember knows that Garble is becoming increasingly annoyed with how much she’s working him compared to the other dragons.
Just when she decides to give him a break, she realizes it is nearly time for the biannual controlled forest fire on the outskirts of the Dragon Lands.
On a sizable island near the eastern border there is a forest of hardy trees that grow very quickly and produce a highly flammable oil. Every two years the dragons must burn a large section to keep troublesome phoenixes from roosting there.
When Ember summons Garble again, he is very irritated. His mood changes quickly when he learns what Ember wants from him, though.
“Wait, you want me to fly around and burn trees that explode when they’re on fire?”
“Think you’re up to it?”
“Uh, YEAH!”

Hmm, you’d think the dragons could sell those trees if they’re such a problem. Surely someone would be intrested in using the oil from them, and the dragons would make some bits and gems off it so they’d be happy.
Yes. That definitely makes them a problem.
Phoenixes don’t die of old age. If not killed, they will simply keep renewing themselves. Not only that, but only predators that can resist their fiery defense mechanisms can get the best of them. To top it off they lay entire clutches of eggs. All of this means that they multiply quickly and their populations easily spiral out of control when left to their own devices. A few phoenixes won’t cause much, if any damage. But the heat of a large flock congregating somewhere may scorch the place and they all need to eat too.
The Dragon Land’s ecosystem is relatively delicate, so phoenixes are seen as a bit of a pest.

How does that old line go? ‘The reward for doing a good job is more work’?
And how exactly do phoenixes make trouble for dragons?
Also, trees that explode when they’re on fire – evergreens, then? One uncle of mine who used to work with the CCC told me that if you were ever in a forest fire, stay away from the evergreens. They don’t burn so much as explode.
