^^ well, the whole point of science fiction is “magic in metal casings”, so it kinda goes unsaid.
from what i do get apparently the injected nanomachines are being spread through the body by adrenaline, which is (obviously) released when you are impaled, and the big spikes are just for showing off. psychological warfare is the whole point of using your victims as cyberzombies after all.
