These mountain sheep spend most of the year living in sex-segregated groups and almost all males participate in homosexual sex. Typically, an older male courts a younger male, lowering his head and neck and sometimes flicking his tongue and growling. The older ram then mounts the younger one from behind. On occasion, rams engage in “huddles,” a cluster of as many as ten rams rubbing, nuzzling and mounting each other.
 
Also, according to this article, male bighorn sheep are mostly gay, and only have sex with females in breeding seasons, mostly for reproductive purposes.

It is possible to conceive of a society that is predominantly homosexual. The males and females can be homosexual most of the times, and breed only in breeding seasons. Or, half of the population is homosexual and doesn’t breed, and the other half breeds. The possibilities and workarounds are many.
 
The idea is that nature is creative when it comes to biology, and almost any “crazy” headcanon would have some counterpart in reality. So don’t feel compelled to say ponies must be straight mostly. It’s bound to be true in some alternative universe.
 
It’s interesting to note that some novels have explored the theme that in the future, homosexuality is enforced as social norm to curb overpopulation, as early as in The Wanting Weed (1962), so homonormativity is not a new idea really.

Still don’t see why people feel the need to make characters like that, but at least it’s purposely meant to be an alternate universe dealy.
