I wholeheartetly agree. However, I must say that the playmobil sets sold nowadays don’t seem to hold up the quality of the older sets. One crucial difference I see is that (at least by the looks) the castle sets nowadays allow for the building of one specific castle rather than giving the freedom of the older sets to build whatever you wanted (so long it didn’t require a four way joint) ;)  
I used to have some pirates and wild west playmobil too, but I didn’t hold on to those as firmly as to the knights stuff that had always been my favorite due to the option to build up all kinds of castles rather than having just one single possible item.

It is a lot of fun making these and by now I am offering this as a workshop at a monthly brony meetup I am attending. And indeed I was a big Playmobil fan as a child and am very happy now that I never gave in on my parents suggestions to get rid of it when I had passed the actively playing age ;)  
Not only does the Playmobil sometimes provide nice pieces of background equipment for projects (I made use of it a couple of times before) but it can sometimes even come in very handy during pen and paper RPGs.  
The one thing I direly missed with Playmobil castles as a child was the lack of a four ends joint for the walls. The limit to three end joints undermined many castle building projects back then :-D
