Was a rock.
Film didn't really do the staircase any favours in showing it's design, at a guess the water rushing in the dome most likely smashed the top four staircase levels, by then the bottom two would have been inundated by water seepage.

Grand staircase was in front of funnel 2, rear lesser staircase in diagram above no longer exists as you see in this stern amalgam of hundreds of submersible photos CGI assembled.
