Reindeers are a species of deer. And I do like the idea of different types of deer being in Equestria, including non-sapient ones (like the pet deer Fluttershy had). So the different group idea sounds good to me.
Maybe they’re a different subspecies or something? Aren’t reindeers and deers different?
I think it has more to do with time and budget concerns. Tweaking a pony flash puppet to make a Changeling, Kirin, or Deer is probably a lot cheaper and takes a lot less time compared to making new puppets from scratch. That’s just me taking guesses though.

I fully agree with this statement. But admittedly, they could be a subspecies or something of ‘reindeer’ and not ‘deer’ in the general sense? I mean there are variations like bat ponies or kirin, seaponies… so who’s to say actual canonical deer don’t look this way?

Update: There is a similar screenshot but the middle reindeer’s eyes are open.
I couldn’t find it by reverse search and there was nothing in the ‘deer’ tag to tell me it wasn’t. So.. probably?
