With how easy the crystals break, it kinda makes sense for how the dragons eat them.

@Shimmering Spectacle
Diamonds are primarily carbon.

Rubies and Sapphires are mostly aluminum oxide.

Emeralds are a beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate.

Amethyst is a kind of quartz, which is crystallized silicon dioxide.

Pearls are just lumps of calcium carbonate.

Garnets are neosilicates, which means they’re silicon oxide and two other chemical elements which determine which kind of garnet it is.

Opals are a non-crystalline combination of silica oxide and hydroxylic acid.

@soundtea
Diamonds must be GIGANTIC for them to be shattered simply by dropping them on a ground. Even glass marbles generally don’t do that.

Duck - "someone befriended them, saved them, coaxed them out of their shell, and showed them that sex is nothing to be afraid of. I’m kind of envious of that rape victim"

Fuzzbutt
yeah those are smashing like they’re hollow glass, not just glass.

what are they, christmas ornaments?

no wonder maud was so flippant about them!

Diamonds are very hard, yes, but they’re not tough. They’re brittle! You can break a diamond if you hit it hard enough with a hammer.

Nephrite Jade, for instance, is softer than quartz, but it’s very tough! It might be more easily scratched, but far tougher to shatter.

Why would real gems break like that, it doesn’t make any sense, I mean really almost all gems are made of carbon, and if it’s in some sort of scaffolding, like this diagram.
full
It’s almost Impossible to break it.

Glass on other hand is not carbon.

Yeah, Rarity, you have bigger problems than Dash breaking your gems: namely that they were able to break in the first place. When Maud said all of the gems in the gem cave were common, she neglected to mention they were all fake.
