@Background Pony #1897 In the end, whether the cutie mark is facing left or right does not matter, since it only needs to be reflected if it is in the wrong orientation for the given context. (Some cutie marks violate this rule of reflect-for-other-side, like Sweetie Belle’s where this page gives details.)

This isn’t correct. Official depictions of Sunset’s cutie mark (such as on official websites) have it oriented like this:
 
Her shirts even display it like this in the movies/show.  
This is the correct way - if Sunset is facing rightwards.
 
Yes, but cutie marks are not represented standalone from that perspective.

@Background Pony #1897 This is the correct way - if Sunset is facing rightwards. Most other cutie marks here are oriented such that it would be correct if the pony is facing leftwards.
 
This peculiarity stems from the original Pony Creator, which could only produce left-facing ponies and which I wanted to dissociate myself from. For a while I drew more of my pony vectors facing right than left, and this extended to my cutie mark collection; they are correct for right-facing ponies unless stated otherwise.
