The app has nothing to do with it. Tumblr set an arbitrarily forced filter to the site months ago. Even if you’re in a browser, you get slapped with the “safe mode” filter if you don’t log in, which makes it a little hard for some consumers (me) who are permanently banned from creating an account, or those that otherwise do not want to create an account.

Using a user agent switching plugin, such as User-Agent Switcher to spoof yourself as a Google bot bypasses the filter because they don’t filter bot traffic.
