Y’know, I could see it– it would be totally in keeping with how Ponyville– and the Apple Family– does things for there to be an apple-related contest at the fair where First Prize is a new hat and Second Prize is something serious like a new wagon or a year’s supply of cider or something, because it’s just understood that Applejack is most definitely gonna win that thang but she doesn’t want to sit it out because she’s A Competitor and half the participants are there to see her tear it up anyway, so they just adjust the prizes so whoever comes in First Except For AJ gets the big prize and she gets a new ’un of the kind of hat she always wears anyway.

It’s her dad’s style of hat, but she hasn’t been wearing the same one all this time; her hat’s been shredded on multiple occasions, and she literally has a closet full of ’em.

I mean… it’s her dad’s hat. She didn’t win it from anything.

We need to learn more about AJs parents.
