Do you mean harlequin ladybirds? Because that might’ve been the case (#NotAllLadybirds).
 
The two theories for the invasion are:  
  • The summer heat helped the aphid population, which then exploded the local ladybird population. Small plagues used to happen occasionally in Britain, and a big one happened all across southern England in 1976 with seven-spotted ladybirds.  
  • A swarm of harlequins flew in from mainland Europe over the sea and landed in a small area.
     
    We’re pretty rural though, so few people in academia seemed to know about it, let alone bothered to figure out what happened. All I know is that they ended up starving to death, and I still feel itchy when I see them.
