I knew she was a bug because bugs shed there exo skeleton to grow

One of my changeling queens - Exuvia - developed a magic-tech to disguise her shed skin (i.e. her exuvium) as her normal self in order to thwart assassination attempts.
 
This was a good idea, because her own sister (not Chrysalis) assassinated her molt.
 
After that queen was already defeated, Exuvia dug into her main base with a giant drill machine and incapacitated everybody (i.e. Twilight and co.) with a horrifically loud and shrill siren, releasing a team of technologically armed robo-ninjas and all set to whoop her sister’s ass with a lightsaber. She was very apologetic after she realized she didn’t need to fight anybody.

…Would changelings have to change back to their natural form to molt? Because if they molted while they were turned into a pony or something, that might scare the crap out of someone.

I’d love to see a story using this idea with the slowly deanimating shed skin wandering around Ponyville and scaring everyone half to death.

What if the molted shell maintained some form of vestigial consciousness due to residual magic animating it. It’s behavior would be similar to a data ghost from doctor who, with the shell’s “mind” being a copy of whatever ocellus was thinking at the time of the molt, with its consciousness decaying over the course of hours as the magic fades until in eventually just gets stuck in a thought loop, and then later deanimates.

Oh boy, somebody get this kid a blanket.

Even if it is, it probably only works if you’re a slightly smaller changeling.

Now she will be vulnerable to predators for a few hours

I wonder if it’s possible to wear an old changeling skin…

That slit on the head of the slightly-darker-blue changeling makes it look like some kind of bank.
