It could be how Celestia and Luna have immortality but remember even basic age spells such as deaging and aging up are apparently higher level magic than time travel

Sadly, I can already hear the Naruto fans pointing to Tsunade and her ability to look so young with that jutsu or whatever it is she does.

I imagine they probably only work to a certain extent, useful for living for only a couple of extra lifetimes.
 
Also, the Alicorn Amulet is explicitly noted as being extremely rare and unique and abnormally powerful, and there’s probably only a dozen Top Level Unicorns on the planet. So don’t get the idea of “free immortality for EVERYPONY!” in your head.

Yeah JP, I always assumed that it was a really high-def illusion.  
Kind of like how Pinkie didn’t really lose her snout, because if she did she’d be dead with no way to breathe. It’s just an illusion
