Man I loved this issue.
Considering the “deviation” explored in this one-shot (how many pages is it gonna be BTW) is that Blueblood is the talented magic-user instead of Twi, that’s sorta the point.
Because, aside from that one time with the Yaks, we’ve never seen him do anything useful?
That and he just never gave the impression of being very magically powerful, which seems to be a prerequisite for the position of Celestia’s Favorite Student.
And lastly – I was mostly joking with my original comment that you linked to.
About that. Why should Blueblood be such a horrible choice? Sunset Shimmer ended up worse than he’d been, and even Twilight was an antisocial bookworm before going to Ponyville.
Yeah, the Equestria Daily article wasn’t super clear about it, but “Deviations” is a multi-franchise themed event. Five “what-if” one-shots from five different series (except for Orphan Black, which is getting it’s own 6 issue what-if mini-series, not just a one-shot).

This time it’s “What would have happened had First Contact occurred between Romulus and Earth, and not Vulcan and Earth?”
What’s the Star Trek one like? What if Kirk died instead of Spock? Cause they did that already.
Actually it’s just one MLP story. The other four are “Deviations” for other series like Star Trek and such.

I wouldn’t be certain of that, but I do agree we could be a lot more secure in how he’ll be portrayed if it were Whitley doing it. (His Blueblood and Shining Armor FF was great) But I suppose it was Cook’s idea to do this, and if it were Whitley he might have come up with something else unrelated to Blueblood…
