As extremely annoying as it is a lot of places make it an employee requirement.
When I worked at K-mart they were always on your ass about people getting rewards cards and credit card applications, wanting you to get a certain amount every day. I came close to getting fired because I wasn’t comfortable pushing people. I was a cashier, not a salesperson. And I hate it when that’s done to me, so I didn’t want to do it to others.

same, though I always softened the blow whenever I did cashiering - ask once if they were interested in signing up for the discount card or if they had one already, the answer was always no so I’d say “okay” and keep going
