Makes you wonder how long they’ve been that way. For a while, certainly, but were they always that way? Was ascension their equivalent of alicornhood or was it once just a normal part of their development? Did they just get a string of bad queens that left them in a species-wide rut? Or just one bad queen who’s been purposefully keeping them hungry to maintain greater control over them?
That also explains the “incompleteness”,stunted development from severe malnutrition. I honestly wouldn’t be suprised if half of all changeling eggs never hatch

I really do think the Changelings are a case of (lack of) Nurture Over Nature; they’ve clearly been deep-cursed as a species to suffer for lack of sharing Love, but so far every one we’ve seen who wanted to become better than they were has been able to do so simply by embracing that Love, which means they were just… raised wrong. They’re a whole race of abused kids who grew up to perpetuate the cycle of abuse for no other reason than they never knew there was a better way.
Makes sense, maybe they can’t feel love properly unless ascended, after all they are “incomplete” thats why they have the holes

Chrysalis was already kinda on to that with Shining Armor before the wedding, she just couldn’t help herself from being a jerkass about it. There’s a comic somewhere that has Twilight asking a Changeling why they don’t just love each other and feed on that, and its response is essentially “We thought of that, but it turns out we’re all jerks”.
That makes sense, like growing crops, cause war and hatred, feed off the results, repeat. I wonder why the changelings didn’t figure out they could do that but with love, encourage love, feed off the ambient love produced like radiation, repeat, I’m sure if they did that they would be very popular in equestria, espiecally in the crystal empire, then they have been a bunch of perpetually starving,underdeveloped/deformed, barely viable husks
The implication seemed pretty clear to me that the Windigo weren’t just passively absorbing the disharmony, but actively encouraging it.
Paternal alicorn looks unamused, you baddies have nice teeth.
I recommend against further aggravation.
