The rendering time was about 1.5 mins per frame, on average. The new cycles de-noiser is magic, and I left it on the default settings.
I used 64 samples and max 3 bounces, which would normally be noisy for an indoor scene, but in this case the I made the floor and back wall, and everything else is just exposed to HDRI lighting. That makes a HUGE difference, because almost every sample is going to bounce off to infinity and be lit by the HDRI rather than needing to bounce around a bunch to hit a light source.
Also to make the hair not hose my render times I set max transparency to 8. In some cases that can cause issues, but in this case any sample/ray that passed that threshold would be already deeply buried in the hair. If you are doing leaves with alpha or something similar that would not end up looking as good.
Also there is an addon called “random cycles seed” which randomly changes the sampling seed every render/frame, which means any artifacting you have do have gets list in the animation.

All three of them. Ponies tent to have a high volume hair after all and so have the EQG.
Imho here the hair is much to flat.
