It took me a while, but I figured out what’s bugging me about Fry here – it’s like no effort was made to adapt his hairstyle into something that looks more like a mane, and I think his ears may also be too low, with the result that he doesn’t look enough like an actual pony, making the reference feel too cheap (even if it is wonderfully fitting in the context of the story).
 
Given that I just criticized a different artist for this same issue in a different thread, I figured I had to come here to keep things fair.

I’d still be wary about buying anything from those two after their previous hustles. They made a very shoddy product the first time (at least after they shut the quality control off), and the second time they were out and out committing fraud. A very sleazy one too with their magic ‘cure’.
 
I wouldn’t buy anything these two tried to sell after that.

In this instance though Ponyville knew what the Flim Flams were up to. They just liked the merch they were hawking, so went with it.

… wouldn’t that be like someone in our world making up a scam to “explain” where nails come from? The answer’s pretty obvious – at the factory.

How many times have Flim and Flam scammed this town?

Given the natural flow of this story, where literally all the other ponies were throwing bits at Flim Flam for toys and such, using one of the best known memes as a fun gag is fine.
 
It would be different if the structure of the story was made all to throw Fry into one panel, but that wasn’t the case.

I think they can do a lot better than referencing one of the stupidest scenes from one of the worst episodes from the post dead inside era of Futurama.
