My own headcanon is that Granny and Grand Pear were dating and they were going to get wed, but something happened and (most likely Grand Pear’s parents) made him choose between the family or his relationship, he choose family and broke Granny’s heart, and from then on the feud started.

Headcanon: Granny Smith and Grand Pear both lost their spouses when their children were foals. The widow and widower became attracted to one another at first, but their family business rivalries came between them. Unrequited love turned into anger and then into hate, and thus the Apple/Pear feud was born.
