Description
Ember sleeping with her mother.
Due to their strong bond with nature dragons don’t die, or at least not like the other creatures in Equestria. When their time comes, they simply fall asllep and their body become one with the elements. They are technically still alive but will never wake up again although it is possible under special circumstances for them to briefly regain consciousness before falling back into their eternal sleep.

Most old dragons live alone and in isolated or dangerous places like a mountain top or the everfree forest so most of the time they’re safe, but when it’s not the case they are hidden or brough back to the dragon lands which is, like you said a huge pain to do. The only dead dragons who are systematically hidden and taken care of are the dragon lords whose bodies (besides two of them) are housed in a mausoleum in the dragon lands.
Indeed. They wanted to do something similar in the movie with kludgeltown being built inside a dragon skeleton and the townpeople excavating his crystal heart.
So according to this story a good part of Equestria would be made of dragon? that’s interresting.
Also it’s not surprising this theme is used in a lot of stories as it was already present in ancient legends about
dragons and other monsters who were embodiment of nature.
I remember reading a story – I can’t recall the title now, although I’m sure I could track it down if I had some time to do so – which had a similar concept as this. It had it that dragons never die, not in the sense other beings do, and grow continuously as they age. Mature dragons will begin to enter periodic hibernation – like the century-long nap the one in “Dragonshy” was settling in for – and as they become older and older and bigger and bigger, their slumbers become longer and more frequent and their periods of wakefulness shorter and more sporadic, until eventually they settle down somewhere and for all intents and purposes become a permanent part of the landscape, awakening only very briefly and occasionally when something manages to rouse them. This has apparently been going on for long enough that a significant portion of Equestria’s landmarks, landscape and geology are composed of immensely ancient dragons sleeping next to, around and on top of each other. Whitetail Woods, for instance, was implied to have grown on top of a dragon called Whiskers Whitetail. Tartarus is another dragon that tried to contain all the evils in the world in its body, and now serves as a common cautionary tale among dragons on the dangers of overindulgence.
Discworld has a similar thing with trolls in The Light Fantastic, come to think of it – big and old enough trolls tend to “catch philosophy”, settle down in one place to ruminate in peace, and eventually become mountains. There was also a Pokémon fanfic which had the same idea with Torterras.
… this comment got a little away from me.
Thanks :)
