The writers are weird on the issue. The show writers themselves have said outside material is canon unless contradicted by the show and its producers, at which point the show takes precedent.
 
Following that, there have been very few contradictions so far.

If you don’t want to acknowledge anything that happens elsewhere in the franchise unless it also happens in the show, nobody is forcing you to, but if it has Hasbro’s ™ on it, it’s canon.
