“Proof” and “hinting at” are two different things. It seems to me like they’re trying to keep it just barely at the level of plausible deniability so either side can easily see it the way they want and the franchise doesn’t get hate for being either pro-gay or anti-gay, particularly in some less tolerant parts of the world.

I’d still say this is further proof of Lyrabon being canon. As this could be presented as a double date that’s occurring. I don’t see any other reason why these particular characters would be seen sitting together unless the writers were hinting at something.

True, that is yet another interpretation. There are so many possible interpretations of the relationships between the four characters in the picture, and all of them are equally valid from a given viewpoint. :)
 
Even an “official” interpretation (from the artist in cases of fanart, or from the script/episode in cases of screencaps) only carry so much weight as well, if you employ the “death of the author” concept to treat their their official view as just another opinion.

As far as I’m concerned, this might even not be a date at all. Outings with friends are still possible. It’s just I find it annoying when people start shipping characters basing solely on them sharing screentime.
 
I also happen not to enjoy same-sex ships, but that’s not as important as my previous point.
