I think they wanted more of a contrast between his menacing Pony of Shadows form and his normal form. Having him be so small and scrawny highlights the idea that the darkness really isn’t who he is

Not the scariest part. I was absolutely spooked when blackness started to consume his eyes. Was never expecting actual creepypasta stuff like that in the show
