The whole point of Starlights speech was that they choose to embrace love and be this way. If they were brainwashed they would have force pharynx to change or kicked him out. The fact that Thorax didn’t and the others didn’t do it behind his back show they aren’t.
 
Also, the episode pointed out in multiple ways that embracing love and caring too much can make you weak and you need to know when to defend yourself.

The true anomaly is Chrysalis as she doesn’t apply to the growth pattern at all.
 
She doesn’t have the same eyes, she has flowing “hair”, and just generally doesn’t look like the rest of them. I know initially it was to showcase her being a queen, but with the growth of the species, it may indicate that, she has been gathering so much love through the hundreds of years that the changelings have been active, that should she attain the imago transformation, she’ll become a god incarnate.

Regardless, one episode isn’t enough to change someone’s viewpoint so quickly. That’s a big problem I have with mlp - they don’t seem to want to do things over story-arcs anymore.
