Interesting. Thanks for the explanation.
I think it’s a process that involves having your flesh stripped aware.
I wonder why the shock of what’s happening to them causes universally causes death. You’d think there would be an least some cybermen with the mental fortitude to survive
I think so, either that or EarthShock.
Sounds like the “perfect” beings are quite flawed.
This is not exactly right, but it’s close enough in practice.
Cybermen are modified human beings who retain a largely-intact human brain. An emotional inhibitor is installed in all Cybermen because otherwise their psychological response to processing what has happened to them invariably results in death. Feeling any emotion means that the inhibitor is off which means the other emotions felt will be fatal.
It is also possible to simply overwhelm the inhibitor with Super Emotions, which would absolutely be possible with pony love-love magic.
…uh oh
Not just ‘New Who’. 1968s ‘The Invasion’ sees Tobias Vaughn in alliance with the Cybermen, whilst also forcing a certain Professor Watkins to work on creating a ‘teaching machine’ that emits emotional impulses as a means to to make the Cybermen obey him.
Vaughn is seen to test the machine, which results in one Cyberman going insane and wandering off into the London sewers, where in its crazed state it goes on to kill a policeman and two more cybermen. Later, when Vaughn suddenly realises that the cybermen have used him for their own gain, he uses the machine to fight back against them.
Spoilers for doctor who
In the new doctor who the cyber man suffer a fatal breakdown if they feel emotion

I found the central committee creepier by just a hair, but the Mondasian Christmas is a very close second. Mainly because the background music and computer noises they had going were very well done. It’s one of those moments where the audio only format really helps, letting your imagination run wild to the point that the Doctor describing them late in the story is honestly reliving.
Spare Parts is, I think, the best thing Big Finish has ever done.

A ‘Spare Parts’ reference? I’m very impressed!
I’ll happily admit though, that was possibly the creepiest cyberman moment.
Cyberpony: (screaming)
Time Turner: (looks at the paper) I think…you may have made a connection to the original host, Vinyl.
Vinyl: You’ve seen this happen before?
Time Turner: Couple times, actually. Sometimes, it happens when something they care about is threatened or a duty that’s etched into their minds. I’ve seen at least two with the former and one with the latter.
Time to upgrade their emotional buffers
