I think you’re out of your mind. Emotional extortion is when you turn on the waterworks when your mom doesn’t want to buy you an extra scoop of ice cream. Not when it legitimately makes you cry when she brushes you off again when you try to insist that being permanently hostile towards your spouse without even being able to specify a rational reason is not good for your family life, emotional wellbeing or pretty much anything at all except her petty satisfaction.
As for forcing an all-or-nothing issue, seeing as this was the only thing that seems to have got anything other than disregard and marginalization of the problem out of her, well, she was in dire need of a reality check. She’s been essentially saying “I’ve been in her life much longer than you, I can afford to be a massive ass and there’s nothing you can do about it, lol!” to Luna, and that is exploiting someone’s emotional connection to you, not this.
She’s not extorting. She addressed the issue with her mom and her mom literally rolled her eyes at Twilight’s concern. Twilight is crying from hurt that her mother is brushing the issue aside. She’s honestly asking the question because the way her mom has been acting is putting stresses on her relationship.
Twilight is acting instinctively on the hurt that her mother seems not to care and the fear of what might happen to her relationship if her mom can’t get along with Luna.
Honest emotional response is not extortion. Extortion is intentionally using some lever to get your way.
@TexasUberAlles
That is a load of horseshit and you know it.
how is what Velvet had been doing not also extortion?
For starters, she isn’t turning on the waterworks to break them up. Or doing anything else to that effect. She simply dislikes Luna. She’s being a shit about it, but that’s it. And even if that was the case, two wrongs do NOT make a right.
Affection garnered through pity is without value and unsustainable, because the other person is going to get a clue at some point. And that’s when shit turns real ugly.
Here is what an ADULT does: Set the person aside, and tell them “You two either get your shit together, or we’ll have to figure out another way for you to see your grandchildren.”
Notice how that doesn’t force an all or nothing issue, neither is it extorting the other by trying to deny them access to their grandkids. It’s a completely reasonable course of action that tells teh person in question “I do not want you out of my life, but I am NOT going to tolerate you disturbing the peace in my home.”
@Urishima
Setting aside that “___ is __” is pretty much never the “End of story”, how is what Velvet had been doing not _also extortion? Constantly being shitty to your kid’s significant other– especially if it involves dodging any question of why– is directly forcing them to choose between the two of you, which is absolutely a stacked deck if you actually have a good relationship with them otherwise. It’s a well-known emotionally manipulative behavior by meddling parents, as well as those who disapprove of their children’s lifestyle choices.
@Urishima
That’s pretty much the only ammunition a kid has in a procedural argument with their parent, especially when said parent has already been an ass about something important to the kid’s life.

What if Twilight Velvet’s trepidation is because she’s from Sil’s other AU, where Luna won and rules the world with an iron hoof and Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 80s?
Twilight Velvet should realize how lucky Twilight(Sparkle) is. She could have ended up WAY, WAY worse. Luna is devoted, family-oriented and comes from a good family. The only one making trouble is TV(Twilight Velvet - ha, these initials…). Night Light, Shining Armor, Spike, Cadence and Celestia are all fine with the relationship. Luna only enters the fight when Twilight Velvet provokes her by acting hostile or whispering behind her back. It’s just really annoying to watch.
Of course, let’s not forget that this is fan-made. Twilight Velvet is not actually like this, right?
Still, this depiction of her is by far the most irritating I’ve ever encountered in the entire fandom. There must be worse, obviously, but this one…is not great.
@Wodahseht
It’s a guilt trip, a justified one but still a guilt trip.
Does it really qualify as a guilt trip when you’re asking a legitimate question?
Because so far AU Velvet has never really stopped acting like she wants the relationship to crash and burn.
I try real hard to never give my mother in law any guff, because from the first time I drove her daughter home because the new anime geek friend I’d made didn’t have a ride, she immediately tagged me as “he followed you home so you can keep him” and just smirked quietly at us until we realized there was an Us.
Hopefully, Velvet will finally be able to hash this whole thing out with Luna this time. But I have a feeling that this might go on for quite a while longer
@Wodahseht
Don’t forget Twilight’s tendency to snowball things like thinking that being tardy would result in her being sent back to magic kindergarten.

Really? Worse depictions of Twilight Velvet? Didn’t stumble across such. Now you got me curious.
I’ve seen worse. Way, WAAAAAAAY worse.

>It’s super effective!
>Momma Sparkle has been defeated!
Also, this is a very sad comic.
Their ears are lowered in all panels!

That’s not sneaky. That’s honest emotional vulnerability brought on my mom rolling her eyes at what Twilight considered a reasonable request.
