I think it’s sad that the parents of the apple siblings are the only ones not around any more. Everyone else’s parents are alive and well but Pear Butter and Bright Mac just aren’t around anymore.

I think I recall a similar story.
 
A chinese emperor sent seeds to all of the children in the kingdom, whoever grew the best plant became the new emperor. Sadly, one seed, belonging to a boy named Ling just wouldn’t grow. When the day came for the kids to present thier plants, the emperor was surprised to see his hadn’t grown. That’s when he revealed that no plant should’ve grown because he had boiled all of the seeds before hand! Every cheater was exposed and Ling became emperor.
 
Minus the cheaters in a competition, Twilight had a similarly impossible test as you all say. She should not have been able to hatch Spike’s egg, yet she gained the power to do it. After becoming Celestia’s student, she eventually became a princess.

If the test was meant to be impossible to pass, I have to wonder… Was it even a real egg? If they do decide to stay with (or at least not contradict) Lauren’s intent there, Twilight might be Spike’s only parent.

That was actually Lauren when she was asked about the test that Twilight did, why it was hatching a Dragon egg and if this meant every unicorn who passed the test had a dragon little brother at his/her side.
 
As it turns out (keep in mind that nothing Lauren said back then could hold any ground now) the test was impossible to pass, and the idea was to just analyse and watch what the unicorn could do with the egg. But Twilight was so powerful that she managed not only to hatch it but also forced it to grow really quick.

I thimk there was a rumor that someone at DHX said his egg was not supposed to be hatchable or at least only under extraordinary circumstances. His parentage could be.. weird.

I think the only pair of parents on the show who don’t share a race are Cadance (alicorn) and Shining Armor (unicorn).

Heck, if she was given up for adoption when she was particularly young, she might not even know who her biological parents are.
