I can’t exactly remember what convinced me to become a big fan of Starlight but I would say the anti-Starlight bronies who happened to be Discord apologists did play a part in it.
Over time I got over it though, and I saw how badly/annoying the anti-Starlight bronies were acting, which kinda convinced me to give her a second chance.
The people whom hate the show now just because of Starlight, and claim it’s now the “Starlight Glimmer show,” remind me of people who used to bash the show for being the “Twilight Sparkle Show,” or hated on Sunset Shimmer, and such.
That’s why I kinda like seeing them defending her here, because of those parallels she has with both characters.
Ah, I understand.
Well, “hate” is a strong word. I didn’t hate her like say those teens who draw anti-art of their most hated Sonic character/s do, but I wasn’t keen on her rushed reformation at first, and such.
You hated Starlight in the past?
A cameo, mention, or one appearance would be fine.
I think Starlight & Sunset work better as secondary characters, but occasional episode/movie focus on them doesn’t hurt.
I wouldn’t wanna see Sunset everywhere in FIM either, but I feel like she at least deserves a one off appearance in FIM, but the closest we’re getting to that is the Forgotten Friendship EQG episode, but that’s alright, considering Season 7 pretty much confirmed Comics and EQG as Canon, It gives peace of mind knowing Sunset and Celestia really did reunite under ‘canon’ lore and people can’t argue against it.
And if we’re getting less of Starlight that’s nice, but I personally wouldn’t know. Haven’t had the chance to check out Season 8 yet.
I think they try too hard to make both characters more human sometimes, but at least they’re trying to make them a li’l more appealing. Like Starlight’s love of kites, or befriending of Trixie & Maud. Glimmer does have an awkwardness about her I kinda like. Sunset has some nice things too.
I think we’re seeing less of Starlight actually, especially in the newest season so far, and she had a much smaller role in the previous season finale. As for Sunset, while she’s practically become the main character of EqG, I think fans tolerate that more, because they don’t come out as frequently as the main Pony show, so we don’t see her as much as Glimmer. Some fans also felt it was unfair Glimmer got to be in both shows, while Shimmer doesn’t, which has also contributed to why most Sunset fans hate Glimmer.
But when you think about it, if Sunset appeared in the main show as much as Glimmer, they’d probably get sick of her too, and have no reason to look forward to her EqG appearances, as she does help that series stand out a bit.
I remember before “Rainbow Rocks” came out, fans hated Sunset as much as Starlight, but most fans seem to of warmed up to both characters more lately.

Yeah, I honestly kinda dislike the way they’ve been portraying Sunset in some of the shorts.
There are traits they’ve given Sunset and Starlight at times that really are just completely unnecessary.
I haven’t really watched them much which is why I’ve been able to retain more of my like for her, I’m sure she’d be dragged down just a bit if I actually watched, but I mostly don’t watch not because of that, but just cause I’d rather not watch 3 minute shorts. If they were like 10-15 minutes, I’d be in for it.
While I’m a Sunset fan and not a Starlight fan, I do understand it’s kinda funny that some of us Sunset fans seem to hate Starlight for very similar character traits/reasons.
For me, I just feel she’s a bit too much in the Limelight primarily, which again, I suppose you could argue that with Sunset.
Dude, let it go. I used to be a Starlight-hater too, but now it’s just getting old.
@PastelBacon
It’s kinda debatable if she’s more powerful, and I haven’t really seen many comparisons of her with Shining, and Cadance, she’s probably just more skilled at fighting, and such then Twilight was.
Arguably, Sunset still has some Su-qualities too, as in the following movies, specials, and shorts she’s good at science, video games, sports, playing guitar, singing, and other hobbies. Arguably, she even seems more skilled/smarter then human/glasses/Sci-Twilight. Her only character flaw is her temper, and even that is a rare occurrence.
Not saying one character is better then the other, I just feel they have similar problems, but there’s good things about them too.
I just find it odd that fans love Sunset for the same reasons they hate Starlight.

I can definitely see the Sunset Mary Sue argument from the Rainbow Rocks standpoint, which is why I wasn’t a fan of her in that movie either.
After that though she stopped having the whole Mary Sue thing really, cause she made a lot of mistakes in her own right after that movie.
She also definitely isn’t very powerful in her own right, just a very skilled technician.
Starlight on the other hand, is more powerful than Twilight, and even her older brother Shining Armor, as well as possibly being more powerful than Princess Cadance.
That’s a Mary Sue amount of power, since she’s a main character.
However, she of course like you said, does have many mistakes and flaws, which makes her not a complete Mary Sue.
It’s why a said ‘A bit of a Mary Sue’
No, that’s not how it works. Certain characters behave mary sueish as part of a story because certain aspects of them are too perfect/overpowered or whatever traits they have. They don’t stop behaving like this if they have some arbitrary “weaknesses”. If that were the case you could just give a character a weakness and fix everything that might be wrong about them in that regard.
For example Superman is an iconic character that often needs to be heavily nerfed in stories and arguably is a bit OP and also perfect as a person and always does the right thing. Now by making him vulnerable to kryptonite you don’t get a perfectly written character. You just get one that works for Superman action stories.
The problem about mary sues is that certain aspects about them are too perfect in the story they’re in or as part of the character they are. Different people will always have strongly differing opinions about these kinds of characters but that doesn’t make the points of criticism moot.

Some say the same things about Sunset & Twilight.
Not to mention, Starlight does have weaknesses, has made mistakes, and has a vulnerable side too. Things Mary-Sues don’t have.
Starlight is overpowered.
She is a bit of a Mary Sue.
There’s logical reason to hate her kind of character for some people.
While I don’t go this far with it, I’m not sure I can ever fully like her character.
Okay
no, you’re in what’s called the silent majority. The haters are the vocal minority.

Really?…..well I’m in that group because I like her
