Description

Twilight sat in the dark, curled up in a ball as she held the picture in her hooves. She could have used her magic but… she just couldn’t will herself to do it. The photo was crisp and clean despite how often Twilight crushed it to her chest. The spell she had cast on it years ago saved it from her.

“Tia…” She sobbed, trying not to chock on her tears. Even after all this time, it still hurt to see Celestia’s beautiful smile. She had been so cheerful that day. Bouncy in a way only a millennia year old goddess could be. They had shared jokes, teased one another and held their son in their hooves as she fed the colt. Sirius had been so quiet that day, they got to have just a few minutes to themselves. It had been a perfect day.

Then she disappeared… Twilight rolled onto her back, fresh tears flowing down her cheeks when she heard something. It was faint, as if from miles away. Someone was calling her.

“Mother!? Mother, where art thou?!” A small voice called out, just before her bedroom door slammed open. A panting colt stood in the doorway, grinning as he trotted closer. “Ah, we have finally found thou, mother. Uncle Spike said he could not find thou but said thou might be in one of the old rooms.”

“We did not know about this place.” He said, frowning at the room. There were no lights. Twilight had smashed them months ago. The room needed to be dark. Twilight laid there, the tears being soaked into her fur, so her son missed it. Or perhaps it was the lack of light. Either way, Sirius finally reached the bed, standing on his hind legs so they were muzzle to muzzle.

“Mother, we bring you joyous news!” He reported, looking very proud of himself. Twilight said nothing, looking past him at the open doorway. Sirius reached into his saddlebags and pulled out a piece of parchment. It had a big gold star and lots of checks on it. “Look, mother! We have finally bested the villain called math. We had trouble with it last time but look! All checks.” Sirius beamed, waiting for his mothers praise. Why wouldn’t she. She always praised him when he did good. Even when he didn’t, she would smile and help him with whatever had troubled him.

But Twilight just… she couldn’t do it today. It was too much. At her silence, the colt grew nervous.

“Mother?” He crawled on the bed, resting his test beside Twilight. “Mother, art thou alright? Art thou falling ill?” He asked, reaching out to touch her forehead. Twilight swatted his hoof away, turning her back on him.

“M-mother?” He said in a small voice. Twilight’s eyes remained on the photo. “M-mother, who is that in the photo with you?” He asked, breaking Twilight’s all the more. Tears fell freely as she took in his words. He’d been so young when Tia passed. He couldn’t even recognize his own mother.

“S-Sirius…I need you to leave.” Twilight said, pulling the picture close to her chest, closing her eyes to let the darkness block out everything else. She just needed some time alone. She didn’t see his expression drop. She didn’t see the tears threatening to fall.

“D-did I do something wrong?” He asked, stepping away. Confusion and sadness warred for dominance in his voice though Twilight kept her back to him. “I got a better grade, mother! I did so~~”

“I just need you to go, Sirius.” Twilight tried again, wanting Sirius gone before she said something she would regret. “Now.” Still, the colt remained. He was adamant.

“I’ll do better!” He promised, wanting to reach his mother. To get her to just look at him. “I’ll… I’ll get all A’s and~~”

Sirius, Leave!” Twilight snapped, shocking the colt. There was a long moment of silence. So long that Twilight had thought Sirius had finally left so she could just bask in the solitude she was trying to enjoy. All she needed was some time alone and she would be fine. Just… just let her bask in her memories for a little longer.

Twilight’s mind drifted off, burying itself in long dead memories. As such, she didn’t hear her son as he solemnly walked out the room.

“I’ll do better, mother, I promise.” He whispered, looking back the reclined shaped that was his mother. “I just… I just have to be better, right? I’ll be better. I’ll make you proud.”

As stated before, Twilight hasn’t taken the death of her wife, Celestia, well at all. Despite being surrounded by friends and loved ones, she can’t keep herself from falling into deep bouts of depression. When the sadness gets to be too much, she locks herself in her room and stares at pictures of Celestia or (like in this picture) photos of them together.

Sirius doesn’t understand why his mother gets like this. He only faintly remembers Celestia, though he has grown to admire her from the stories he’s heard from others. Still, despite his lack of knowledge, he tries to cheer his mother up by showing off how smart he is. It usually makes her happy but today, nothing he says gets through to her. He won’t give up though, he just has to try harder, right?

Note: I’m not really sure how depression works exactly but I assume it’s not a daily thing. What I mean is that everyday isn’t the same. I assume that there are days perhaps even weeks where the person acts normally before the weight of their misery just bears down on them, leaving them with no strength or will to do much more than lie down, curled up in the darkness.

For Twilight, she will never really get over her wife’s death. It’s just that she gets better at hiding her bad days from others. Sirius knows though. He’s convinced himself that her sadness would end if he could just live up to his late mothers image, hence his desire to be an alicorn.
