Seriously, people are still having this argument all these years later? No one pointing out they could have used a phoenix down for Galuf too? How about Tellah? Cyan’s wife and son? Use it to revive poor General Leo? Death is only permanent if it is story relevant in that universe.

I tend to assume that they’re joking, no matter how belligerantly they try to claim that phoenix downs don’t work if you get stabbed with folded steel.

This honestly isn’t even the dumbest defence of that scene I’ve ever heard uttered without a shred of irony, so I tend to err on the side of not dismissing excuses of this scene as jokes.

You know, it doesn’t mean you hate the game if you just recognise that one scene doesn’t make sense in the context of the world around it. The scene doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and the only way your explanation makes sense is if we assume that every enemy in the game either isn’t trying to kill you or is too incompetent to do so, either explanation takes away any sense of threat and tension from the journey.
 
Which makes said journey really boring.
 
This explanation actually makes the whole game worse. It’s better to just accept this scene was poorly thought out and didn’t work well with the existence of Phoenix Downs and accept it as a blemish on an otherwise great game-assuming you think it is a great game.

besides I got breathed on by a dragon just last week, so I think I am p. much an expert on how much it tickles.

My issue with that statement is that many enemies in this game have attacks that would absolutely reduce you to red chunky salsa if it hit you realistically speaking, and yet you seem to think that these attacks wouldn’t have the same effect as a direct and purposeful stab through the chest.
 
Either a dragon’s breath weapon just lightly tickles you and your characters simply faint from it because they’re absolute pussies or this still makes no sense.
 
You know, you can just accept that there was a part in a game you love that made absolutely no sense and still like it? It’s part of the wonder of being human, we’re not robots that must automatically default to either ‘love’ setting or ‘hate’ setting.

normally the enemies just slash menacingly in your general vicinity, and the ones with guns have really bad aim, so phoenix downs are just for when the character has fainted out of fright.

Applejack is actually the most sensible thing in this picture.
 
Makes more sense then all the bullshit they added about why they didn’t just use Phoenix Downs on her.
