Yeah, some among the animation team clearly either ship them, or love to tease them. Heck, in the comics as well, what with Rarity sleeping with a picture of Applejack by her side and all that. The commentary track in Legend of Everfree even refers to them as everyone’s favorite odd couple, which - while not necessarily meaning couple in the romantic sense - is certainly an interesting choice of words.
