Puns origin story was also pretty dark, with her being the sole survivor of that killer joke. Or that one part with the racist unicorn who lost his leg.
 
Anyway, is there a backstory that explains why Pun is in the hospital?

Sounds like Cerebus Syndrome. In which a work undergoes a gradual transformation from comedy into something that can take itself far too seriously. The end result is either successful and the work transitions into its new format and is accepted, or it implodes on itself, becoming worse and worse, until it goes down in flames. The longer something runs, the greater the chance of it happening. Many webcomics have suffered Cerebus Syndrome over the years.
 
Named for Cerebus the Aardvark. A parody comic that ran for ages, and eventually started becoming darker and more serious, until it was no longer a comedy at all.

It’s just one of those rules of nature: if a silly wacky thing goes on too long, eventually it will degrade into pointless drama. I mean, it happened to Animaniacs of all things, it’s not anybody’s fault.
