Not really - This is the first time any official source has said he disappeared. Before this there really wasn’t any reason to assume he hadn’t just died of old age centuries ago, as ponies presumably do.

Celestia spewing exposition. Great start for tne new series. At least it seems like it they’re going to give Star Swirl some flesh. I just hope they don’t ruin Celestia even more in the process.

That’s due to the fact that around the season 3/Alicorn debate someone claiming to be an employee of the sound mixing company that DHX uses posted a detailed “leak” transcribing the audio from an episode revealing that Starswirl had become bored after so many years of the straight and narrow and decided to mix things up a little bit. The spell he created turned him into Discord. And this would be revealed because Celestia would ask him to turn Twilight into an Alicorn, the same way he changed his own species.
 
It was detailed enough to be plausible to a lot of people. And of course a lot of people cried fake. But the “employee” insisted it was real, and people checked into the details he provided and DHX legitimately used the company he claimed to work for. His last posting said we’d all find out how true it was in the season 3 finale.
 
And of course it all turned out to be bullshit. But apparently some people still hold onto that idea.

I hope we do, starswirl’s disappearance has been one of the biggest mysteries of the show ever since they first mentioned him in luna eclipsed, personally I don’t buy into the whole discord is starswirl headcanon that a majority of the fan base believes in.
