Oh, yeah, I totally forgot about that. The ones who only suffered crippling deformations and disabilities who could still serve in the military went on to do management and other non-combat duties.

If I recall my Halo lore, then Spartan candidates were “conscripted” at around age 6 or 7. Out of the 100-and-something Spartan IIs, about 30 (if that) made it past augumentation. The rest are either dead or frozen.
 
If I recall correctly, that is.

Sure it looks funny, but it isn’t when you know the SPARTAN-IIIs (and quite possibly the SPARTAN-IIs) weren’t much older than the CMC appear to be when they started fighting the Covenant.
