Yes. and while an unreadable silhouette may be fine in a simple image, in a complex image it can screw with composition and make it hard to read.
ohh I get it. I disagree that a good pose is always readable, even as a silouette, but it seems a good thing to keep in mind. so silouettes of people posing, where the pose is clear just from the silouette, are readable silouettes.
The point is that a good pose is readable even as a silhouette and a bad pose isn’t. I would have thought that was obvious.
Edited
I don’t see how a silouette would show you what pose they’re holding.
Stick figures have nothing to do with it.
like if you’re holding your fist out in front of you, or holding your hand out for someone to catch, the silouette’ll be the same. if you’re in a curled up pose, the silouette is just a round lumpy something, while the stick figure would show how you were curled up.
I don’t… what?
well, yes. stick figures are the simplest representation of what pose they’re holding. silouettes are just filled outlines, and don’t really have anything to do with the movement of what they’re outlining.
silhouettes are not stick figures.
like, it’s easy to draw a stick figure that shows what they’re doing, like waving or dancing?
Close, it is when you can tell what pose they’re holding.
I understood it in about 10 seconds.
now what is a readable silouette? I seriously can’t find anyone who says what it is. is it when if you black out the entire figure, you can still tell who it is from the outline?
I got competent at in in a day.
the heck is a “readable” silouette?
this is gesture drawing and it’s easy to understand, but hard to get good at.
