No offense, but I think you guys are just projecting your own biases into the comic, and looking too deeply into it.
 
Still, I will admit many were disapointed that the whole “parallel world/characters” plot was wasted, but for all we know, they might’ve been planning to use more of that later. That might’ve been more-so what the joke was hinting at, rather then “OMG tis comci sux an’ we don’t care!”  
Self-deprecation is nothing new in cartoons, just because they make a meta joke like that doesn’t mean it’s something with a deeper meaning, or that the people making the comics think it’s a “bad” story. You’re taking it too literal.

Katie Cook did the same in Reflection comics when anti-Mane6 complained about not being in this story when everyone was expecting them to play a part.

If it’s supposed to be a joke it’s not funny. Discord has a legitimate criticism here, which makes it less like a joke and more like “We know this is a problem and we don’t care.”

don’t be silly, discord. you don’t read the comics. what do you think you are, some kind of brony?

This panel reminds me of Daffy Duck in duck amuck (a cartoon where he criticizes the animator who’s providing him with inconsistent backgrounds and later erases him). Presumably that cartoon’s writers weren’t actually criticizing their animator’s efforts, any more than the writer here is criticizing their own story.

You don’t see it? Really? Because what Discord is saying here is perfectly valid. That he’s also griping for ego reasons (which is in-character for him) doesn’t change that.
 
It’s possible it wasn’t intended to be self-criticism, but it’s indeed valid.

Okay, I’m convinced now, the IDW comic series is on its last legs.
 
Unless things change, it will collapse and die.

Joking about how your story was bad doesn’t make you clever, it makes the audience wonder why you wrote the story to begin with.
