Gotta move those goalposts anyway…
I think it was because they could only do the scaling, and rotating Mode-7 effects on backgrounds.
Though, Yoshi’s Island was able to do it with sprites thanks to it’s Super FX2 Chip enhancing the game’s special effects. (Though, the GBA version just uses the GBA’s 32-bit processing power.)
tite kuboesque?
And seeing what happened with the changelings gives me hope that some of those other critters can be “domesticated.”
(cough) Dazzlings (cough)
@Beau Skunky
Now that I think about it, the final boss of Super Mario World was like that, even though the SNES didn’t have those limitations. Maybe people were just used to “black screen = epic showdown.”

Then that means the Magic of friendship that is used to defeat them can be compared to Bug spray.
Huh.
Now if only they could do something with the concept more interesting than giving the characters something to blame their worse actions on or just being another beastie to kill.
Seriously, I was more intrigued when I thought their respective and wildly different prides would get the better of them and they would have a rematch.
It’s a land where friendship and magic are synonymous. I’d expect half the baddies out there feed on emotion somehow, whether positive or negative emotions.
Its ecological niche of exacerbating and feeding off negative emption?
Also making them alot like the sirens in terms of threat.

I kinda miss the monsters of the week, as they’re getting too rare in the show nowadays. (Anyone remember the kickass “Cragodile?”)
And yeah, nothing about this creature reminds me of the Windingos…
Agree on the monster. We’ve got an awesome colossus of animated rock and plant matter and it’s being dismissed as “a windigo rip-off monster-of-the-week” elsewhere.
Fuckin’ really…
@Background Human
That’s because the giant bosses WERE the background due to 8-bit limitations.
The Technodrome boss in TMNT, the Gutsdozer & dragon boss from MegaMan 2, Little Nemo’s final boss, and the tanks from SMB3 being a few examples.
Like a Makuta?
