Kinda funny, considering that’s the only time they’ve been portrayed like that.
You should hear the guy complaining about the Mane 6 becoming Damsels in Distress in Two Where And Back Again every chance he gets.
@Mr grump
Yeah, but do people have to mention, or complain about it on the last 16 Fosgitt images in a row? We get it already.
@Pagan
I like his art style, I like how Spike looks here especially. Simply mentioning a white background and wrong cutie mark on a page does not equal hate it just means people have eyes. Seriously no one is losing their minds it’s just an observation calm down.
I didn’t even know who fosgitt was before this. There’s no “hate” here.
Only a mostly unanimous agreement that the art in this particular issue blows.
What is a comment section for if not discussion and critical analysis on the topic at hand?
Especially when that topic is a commercial product.
To be honest, The character designs themselves are probably an aquired taste as there’s nothing inherently wrong with them. But those backgrounds (or lack of them) are a mess.
Edited
I was beginning to feel like I was the only one who felt that way. lol
I like his character designs too, reminds me of Walt Kelly’s “Pogo the Possum,” mixed with Jeff Smith’s “Fone Bone,” and other things.
I kinda agree with the background thing, as sometimes it’s not bad for them to cheat sometimes, as long as they don’t overdo it, like these pages. Still, people can’t pretend Fosgitt can’t draw backgrounds, as he’s drawn pretty good, or decent ones in previous issues, or cover art pieces.
Still love the character design though.
There’s a difference between voicing opinions, and people losing their minds over one artist. Doesn’t make this place a “hugbox.”
Seriously, I take crap for not hating Fosgitt, so the Fosgitt hate is going overboard, especially considering people who LIKE his art (including myself) are afraid to even comment on these images with all the venom in them.
I get it, lots of people dislike his stuff. Do we need to see that on EVERY image?
Also we have fourm threads about this so all the image comments don’t need to be flooded with negativity.
I don’t care if you dislike his stuff, but jesus.
Well at least he actually true something this time
Art style is one thing, but getting a Cutie Mark so utterly wrong is just pure laziness. Heck, even interns could probably google ‘starlight glimmer cutie mark’ and end up with a more accurate Cutie Mark than…whatever that is!
And it even looks like he just slapped in there without caring about angles or perspective!
I like Fosgitt’s style and his work but yeah episodes make up for the small stuff by being good so one error barley makes a difference, with this though nothing really makes up for it.
Like josh 103 said in the other image, no amount of “it’s his style” excuses this.
A blank white background in a scene where the most action is a surprised owl is lazieness.
Trying to compare cartoon animators who worked on 30 to 60 episodes at a time with a single comic artist working on a single issue is a false equivalence.
Edited
Part of the problem is that we (the brony fandom) have been rather hard on his style from the start, and that’s after you get past his approach to character design.
His first issue (The RD/Spitfire one) had Ponyville looking like a suburban community, and Cloudsdale with lots of brick-and-mortar buildings. I feel he’s had to take this more simpler approach (the FS/DD one is similar with less-detailed backgrounds) because of the nasty fan feedback he got from that.
Fosgitt’s art is very much hit or miss. Anyone who was an Animaniacs or TTA fan will recognize that if Andy Price is the TMS of pony comics (extremely fluid, highly detailed), someone like Fosgitt is the Startoons - more exaggerated and simpler art geared towards motion rather than visuals. It works at times, it doesn’t work at times.
@Mr grump
Nah, he was just including a Hasbro mandated cutie-mark mistake to remain in line with the cartoon’s canon:
Ugh. I didnt even notice that. More proof that this artist is a hack.
Was he sleepwalking when he Illustrated this issue or what?
I’ve seen plenty of monthly action orientated comics with absolutely beautiful backgrounds. This issue took place in the castle of the two sisters right? It feels like they wasted the setting. There’s no atmosphere, awe or sense of antiquity and hidtory that the place has previously exuded.
At the most, we got grey walls and cobwebs.

For Fosgitt’s style and this being a comic more related to action, detailed backgrounds would be a detraction - but keep in mind that is for his style.
Contrast that with Andy Price - where at times his backgrounds can be so busy as to overwhelm the foreground, but at the same time, Andy’s art is better geared towards mostly talking-head type stories with occasional action, whereas this one was principally all action until the resolution.
But it is personal opinion here.
