I think it’s them joking, since the ship itself was making fun of shipping, and the relationship itself was only possible due to a love-drug, so it would be hypocritical if it went canon. As for their teenage years, they were teens, so Mac being attracted to her isn’t unusual.

Yeah, i think there’s a CheerieMac support goign on in animation departament, while new writers like Confalone didn’t noticed these small tidbits and as a writer he doesn’t work with DHX animators so he isn’t aware of that ship. Since McCarthy probably doesn’t care either way with whome he gets shipped, she probably approved that HearthBreakers episode the way it was and with ship teasing that was described in the script.
