I played it briefly in the store. The levels were a li’l bland, but it wasn’t too bad. Interestingly, it’s the first game in the Yoshi series that lets you actually fight Kamek, the series’ main villain. (Besides Bowser/Baby Bowser.)
“Yoshi’s Island DS” wasn’t bad either, though the level music kinda got old fast.
Yoshi’s Story actually used to get alot of hate when it first came out for being very cutesy/kiddy, short/easy, and a 2D game on a 3D console. (Back when 3D was “new” that was a huge issue, as most gamers were moving on from 2D games, or bashing them, as 3D was the big deal at the time. Some used to give me crap for still liking NES & SNES games.) Though, now that those who played it when they were kids are now older, and thanks to the popularity boom for 2D style games, and retro games, the game has become quite well liked for being an early “2 1/2 D” style game.
Similarly, the first Paper Mario for N64 went through a similar fan-backlash drama for not being fully 3D or “Super Mario RPG 2.” (Which was ironically it’s pre-release/early-development title.)
Edited
I tend to hear everyone and their dog hated Yoshi’s New Island. Seemingly, Yoshi’s Story doesn’t really have that many contenders to the title Best Yoshi Game besides Yoshi’s Island… Oh, and I like to believe Yoshi’s Story content influences Smash more than other Yoshi games because it was considered one of the best in the sub-series. I mean, I can’t “know” because I haven’t actually played any. ^w^
I assume they also dropped the “Story” tag so people wouldn’t assume it was like “Yoshi’s Story.”
Funny thing is, despite getting some flack for being short/easy/cutesy back when it was first released, nowadays some prefer “Yoshi’s Story” over the more recent longer/harder games like “Yoshi’s Island DS,” and “Yoshi’s New Island.” It was also one of the few/only 2D games for the N64.
Ah, that makes it funnier. X3
Originally, the first game for N64 (which in itself was originally titled during development “Super Mario RPG 2”) was going to be called “Paper Mario Story,” (to tie into the Japanese title “Mario Story”) until NOA realized what the acronym would be.
I know. However, there’s no reason for me not to jokingly call Sticker Star PMS.
Kinda confusing, as “Sticker Star” & “Color Splash” aren’t really one separate series (debatably) and are the fourth, and fifth PM games overall.
Though, overall, the Paper Mario games basically all feel stand-alone games from each other, (the only link we had between them was the Bow NPC cameo in TTYD.) So it’s kinda confusing to call them that.
Interestingly, Paper Mario (the character) was a highly requested character for Smash Bros. by Japanese fans.
Paper Mario Sticker Star and its successor.
Which games are PMS & PMS2?
PMS was okay. Everything worked. It was just a little boring. Comparatively, I would think. I find levels and sequences in PMS2 are more varied and interesting, and they replaced the pie chart world map with a more scattered one, where the six McMuffins and the paths one must take to get to them are more sporadic and interesting. Additionally, a few systems have been streamlined, including Thing gathering. :3
Honestly, that may be part of the reason why Intelligent Systems didn’t do another Paper Mario like TTYD. That game is just about everything that you could want out of a sequel. Sure, we could get another TTYD-esque game. But, I always ask myself what they could do to make something as special as TTYD. That makes me realize why they seem to want to do different things with the IP. SS wasn’t good, I’ll say. But, SPM was relatively enjoyable and unique, for what it was. And, CS sounds like it’s a good overhaul to SS. What SS should’ve been. Not entirely sure, yet. But, I hear good things about it.
@thps48
I suppose I’d have to play it first, but I don’t think anything’s going to top TTYD.
PMS2 is somewhat improved over its predecessor. Which is difficult for me to prove because several aspects have been carried over from PMS1. I can’t exactly describe it. However, I’ve heard the PMS director listened to a fair amount of the complaints from both fans inside and outside Japan, including the limited story and characters, and attempted to alter and improve the mechanics in PMS2 based on her findings. :)
@Jerkface
I’m hearing good things about the newest one actually.
At most, it only reminds me that Paper Mario is a shell of what it once as.
